Boat Slides: Every Type Explained

Every summer weekend, somewhere on a lake or a bay, the same thing happens. A slide goes up, someone counts down from three, and a boat full of people who were chatting quietly a minute ago is suddenly cheering. It might be a kid on a pontoon slide strapped to the side gate, a teenager on a stiff drop-stitch slide off a wake boat, a guest on a 6 m slide hanging from a yacht’s sun deck, or a cousin flying off the end of the dock at the lake house. All of them are a boat slide, and choosing the right one starts with knowing which family it belongs to. This hub explains the four types side by side and sends you to the full page on each.

In short: boat slides come in four main types: pontoon boat slides (mostly inflatable, about $200 to $750), inflatable slides for other boats, yacht slides sized by the drop from rail to waterline (mostly made to order and quoted), and dock slides (strap-on, floating or fiberglass). Pick by where the slide will start, who will ride it and how deep the water is where they land.

Pontoon boat slides

The most searched type, and the one most families start with. Nearly every pontoon slide is inflatable and straps to the side rail at the gate; RAVE, Airhead, WOW and O’Brien all rate theirs for one rider up to 200 lb. RAVE’s manual sets out what your boat needs (a rail 21 to 30 in high, uprights beside the gate and a gate at least 30 in wide) and asks for 8 ft of water. Builders such as Bennington offer a fiberglass slide from an upper deck. Our pontoon boat slides page covers pontoon sizes and layouts, materials, attachment, safety, prices, gear and care.

Inflatable boat slides

This is the slide for boats that aren’t pontoons, and the guide to how every inflatable slide is built. Lakesurf’s drop-stitch Slide Island ties to cleats on V-drive and I/O boats, many pontoons and houseboats, is rated to 300 lb in slide mode and folds out as a floating mat. Our inflatable boat slides page explains all five families (pontoon, small boat, yacht, dock and freestanding), 1,000-denier PVC vs drop-stitch vs sealed-air, valves and pumps, sizes, care and repair.

Yacht slides

On a yacht, the slide is sized by one number: the drop from the rail to the waterline. FunAir’s models run from the 1.5 m FunSize for yachts up to 20 m to custom Riser and Self-Lifting slides for drops over 9.5 to 10 m, and Yachtbeach sizes its Magic Yachtslides by railing heights from 270 to 620 cm. Most are made to order and quoted. Our yacht slides page has the full size tables, makers, materials and warranties, crew and setup times, the custom process, charter use and published prices.

Dock slides

No boat required. Strap-on inflatables like the Airhead Spillway (which Airhead sells as a dock slide), floating slides like WOW’s two-lane Slide N Smile and Aquaglide’s Freefall 6, and fiberglass slides that Goldco sizes by deck height from 4 to 11 ft. For two-story boathouses, FunAir makes a dock slide in 4, 5 and 6 m. Our dock slides page covers dock height, water depth, attaching, safety and the slides to buy.

How to pick a slide for your boat

  1. Start where the slide starts. A pontoon gate, a swim platform with cleats, a yacht rail high above the water, or a dock. That one answer points you to a type. On a yacht, measure the rail-to-waterline drop.
  2. Check the attachment points. Makers want structural points: rails and uprights that meet their criteria, cleats, or rigging planned with the yacht. See will a slide fit my boat?
  3. Know who will ride. One rider at a time on boat slides, usually 200 lb; 300 lb on Slide Island; budget kids’ slides can be lower. Details in pontoon slide weight limits.
  4. Check your water. Most manuals ask for 6 to 10 ft at the landing; RAVE’s pontoon slide manual says 8 ft and 20 ft clear all around. See water depth and clearance.
  5. Decide: buy or ask. Pontoon, small-boat and dock slides are on sale online. Yacht and custom slides go through the makers and dealers by quote.

All of the sizing help lives in Fit & Sizing, and the rules for a safe day (depth, one rider, a spotter, engine off, life jackets) are on our boat slide safety page. No slide maker publishes a wind or age limit, and we won’t invent one.

Boat slide questions

What is the best slide for a boat?

The one that fits where it starts. A strap-on inflatable for a pontoon gate, a drop-stitch slide for a swim platform with cleats, a slide sized to the drop for a yacht, and a strap-on, floating or fiberglass slide for a dock.

Are boat slides inflatable or rigid?

Mostly inflatable. Rigid fiberglass slides exist on upper-deck pontoons (such as Bennington’s Top Deck), houseboats and docks, and a review site notes that fixed pontoon slides need an upper deck and professional installation. Compare them in inflatable vs fiberglass boat slides.

How much do boat slides cost?

About $200 to $750 for pontoon and small-boat slides on Amazon in October 2026. Yacht slides are mostly quoted; published prices we found include about $2,899 for a Yachtbeach Mini Side and €10,499 for a Yachtbeach 4.6. See yacht slide cost.

Can I put a slide on any boat?

Not any. Each slide has its own requirements: RAVE’s is for pontoon boats only, Slide Island needs a flat area about 3 ft wide with cleats, and yacht slides need planned anchor points. Check the maker’s criteria first.
